Lowestoft Scores
To find this cache you will need to follow a trail along and around the historic Lowestoft Scores, answering questions as you go to give clues for the final coordinates.
The scores trail will take you up and down narrow alleys with occasional steep slopes, uneven surfaces and lots of steps. The final location is on reasonably flat terrain. Overall this is not ideally suited for wheelchairs or buggies due to the number of steps involved.
About the cache
The cache is not at the given co-ordinates, this is for the first of several clues. A carpark is available below the Sparrows Nest gardens.
History appears to suggest that Lowestoft's unique and ancient thoroughfares known as Scores have existed for many centuries. They are a series of narrow lanes created over the years by people wearing paths in the soft, sloping cliff as they travelled between the historic High Street and the Beach Village. The origin of the word 'score' is thought to be a corruption of 'scour', or possibly from the Old English 'scora', which means to make or cut a line.
Many of the scores were named after local people and in some instances public houses that stood at the top of some of the scores. The names of the scores have evolved over time due to buildings being demolished, local names forgotten or corrupted, or circumstances changed.
Scores Race Each year, normally around September, one of the most unique races in the country takes place on and around the Lowestoft Scores. This arduous and hilly 4.75 mile race starts from Lowestoft's historic High Street, along a fairly level course to Links Road, followed by 13 scores - includes 409 steps – finishing at the Triangle Market, High Street. We don't expect you to run the scores, but as you wander searching for clues for this cache, you can probably imagine how tough the race is!
To find the co-ordinates of this cache you will need to follow a trail along and around the Scores, answering questions as you go at each of the given waypoints. You will find answers on information plaques, notice boards and by observing local objects, all of which are permanent fixtures.
