The Castle was built by Baron Ernest de La Grange (of French
nobility). The Castle was located on the hill behind this geocache.
The original plans for Baron's home was for a one-story office
building. The Baron changed the plans in early 1895 and added a
second story and a small kitchen to the rear of the house. The
addition also included a pantry, cooks room and a dinning room,
with it's many windows and balconies. The "Castle", as it was
known, gave the owners and their guests a view of the mine's
operations. Baron La Grange died in France in 1899, apparently in a
swimming accident. Following his death, the Castle became the
residence of Pierre Bouery, the mine's manager. Bouery remodeled
the grounds and Castle. He installed fireplaces with imported
tiles, and sent to France for special wallpaper, and used stained
glass in the windows. The Castle was known for it's famous wine
cellars, gourmet food, and dinner parties. The only thing left of
the Castle is a small rock wall. The fireplace was relocated to the
Weaverville Hotel, where is resides today. Congats to thedawdlers
