Geocache Description:

Zoology lesson: Eastern Wood Buffalo, extinct or not?

The American Buffalo has 2 species The American buffalo and the wood buffalo (see more info here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_bison ). Everyone is familiar with the American buffalo of the great plains, that were slaughtered by the 100,000's almost to extinction. The Wood buffalo is a from western Canada and is a larger. There was (or is according to some) an Eastern sub-genius or ecotype of the wood buffalo, the Eastern wood buffalo. Like the eastern cougar, it was a furtive animal and (the Eastern cougar was rarely seen as very shy animal; many think it is extinct but I have been in some bars around here, I can state there are still cougars there, but perhaps they are immigrant western or Florida cougars-- but I digress). The eastern wood buffalo is also a shy, well, camouflaged animal, and could only be a legend like Bigfoot (obvious a hoax) or the THEM (cache moving devils, recent evidence shows they may exist- see GC2GJDD). The Eastern sub-species was (is?) much, much smaller than the western wood buffalo, this experts speculate due to its poor diet of hemlock, cedar needles and it's favored pine needles. The eastern buffalo was easily differentiated by its horns, which extended from its head in a circular fashion. The horns often became caught in trees and bushes while foraging.. The Unami Indians prized the eastern wood buffalo for it sleek and shiny fur coat. Though primarily black in color, some males turned a brilliant silver in maturity. Mohawk Indians made cloaks that were died in bright red, orange and and more. Despite the coloring, the Mohawks believe that these colors gave them invisibility to their enemies. The Iroquois use the hides to carry medical herbs while the Oneidas stored logs used in ceremonial campfires. Yes, some claim this species is extinct, but reports persist; should you ever find one, GRASSHOPPERS, DON'T KILL IT AND STUFF IT, just report the find. Please visit during daylight hours. Please keep your dog on a leash due to the presence of ground nesting birds. Dogs can and will hurt ground nesting birds. Thank you for your help in protecting the wildlife that exists on the Preserve.
