This cache is part of a nationwide geocaching series called "Cache to Eagle" that showcases these special contributions. In Tanglewood Preserve there are many Eagle Scout Projects, all great contributions to the community. Here are some of them:
- The kiosk by the parking lot was the project of Eagle Scout Richard C. from Troop 369 of Valley Stream.
- The outdoor education area was the project of Eagle Scout Ryan P. from Troop 109 of Valley Stream.
- The large horse paddock was the project of Eagle Scout Matt C. from Troop 577 of Bellmore.
- Several Eagle Scouts have done Trail clearing and improvement for their projects including Nicholas W. of West Hempstead Troop 240, Will F. of Roslyn Heights Troop 267 and Anthony A. of Franklin Square Troop 485.
- The roadside berm was the project of Eagle Scout Carlos R. from Troop 485 of Franklin Square .
- The pergola was the project of Eagle Scout Nicholas T. from Troop 369 of Valley Stream.
Inside the yard behind the main building are several more projects.
- The pony paddock fence & shelter was the Eagle Project of Mark D. of West Hempstead Troop 240.
- The Hawk & Kestral Enclosures were the Eagle Projects of Eli W. and William H., both of Valley Stream Troop 369.
- The Turtle Pond and walkway was the Eagle Project of Kristopher W. of Valley Stream Troop 369.
- The outdoor education area here and sand table was the project of Eagle Scout Brian J. of Hicksville Troop 930.
There are many more projects that have been done here and more planned. You might see some work being done when you visit!
You are looking for a medium lock-it container that's just off the trail. PLEASE BE STEALTHY! Some thorns here and poison ivy is rampant, though I didn't see it at the hiding spot, but long pants are suggested. The cache is within the Tanglewood Preserve. Preserve hours are 9am-5pm everyday and admission is free. The animal exhibits are open Wed-Sun 10am-4pm and there's a $6 admission. You don't need to pay to access the cache, though some of the Eagle Projects are in there.
The pond is stocked with fish by the NY State Bureau of Fisheries and fishing is allowed (those under 16 years of age are not required to have a fishing license).
