This handsome Gothic church dates from the 14th century. Built from local sandstone, its notable features include an impressive tower and an external staircase. Within its grounds are a 17th century schoolhouse, a mausoleum, a medieval cross and an ancient yew.
Take a closer look around the church and surrounding buildings from outside to answer the following questions.
AB: As you enter through the gate from the car park, the school house is on your left and the ancient yew is on your right. A stone in the school house wall shows that it was built in 162A and endowed in 169B.
C: As you approach the South porch, you will see an Ordnance Survey cut benchmark low down on the wall on the left side of the archway. Walk anticlockwise around towards the Chancel and you will pass the staircase to the Stanley pew at the East end of the South aisle. This staircase has C steps, including the small step at the bottom.
D: Continue round to the East window which has D tall arched panels in it. Also at the top of the main window is a circular panel with D identical shapes inside.
E: Continue round along the North aisle and down to the tower. In the middle section of the tower on its North face you can see E round ringer's windows.
F: Walk across the churchyard to the mausoleum. A stone on its North wall shows the date AD 19F9.
