Ulysses Simpson Grant, Jr., nicknamed Buck, was the second
son of President Ulysses S. Grant and Julia Grant.
Born in Bethel, Ohio, Grant spent his early life following his
father as he rose from an obscure officer to General of the Army.
In 1874 he graduated from Harvard University and entered the Law
School at Columbia University. After graduation, he joined a firm
in New York City.
In 1880, he married Fannie Josephine Chaffee and had five children.
Grant worked in private practice and became wealthy. After finding
himself a victim of fraud in a banking and brokerage fiasco, he
moved to California and set up a law practice and invested in real
estate in the San Diego area. He became a leading citizen, who
pushed for the creation of a city park, which became Balboa
Park.
Four years after his wife died in 1909 he married a widow, America
Workman Will. She and Grant traveled extensively until their
twilight years.
Grant died at the Sandberg Lodge on the Ridge Route north of Los
Angeles while on a road trip. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in
San Diego.
