Geocache Description:

A mate of mine had an accident near here a couple of years back by falling asleep at the wheel and parking his car in a tree. He ended up writing his car off and nearly writing himself off too on a trip back to Hamilton after visiting his home in Warracknabeal. Thankfully he only broke a few vertebrae and was only in hospital for a few weeks.

Now if only he had stopped here at the Cherrypool camp ground and had a nap rather than trying to park his car in the branches of a big old red gum!

Cherrypool is from what I can tell, the English corruption of the native name of the area - Djarabul.

Djarabul is located on the Glenelg River and forms a pool with fishing, yabbying, swimming, canoeing/kayaking etc.

It is also nice and easy to access by good sealed roads. Djarabul is located about 50km's south of Horsham and about 80km's north of Hamilton.

It's nice and close to lots of things to do such as touring the Grampians or the Black Range or just chucking a line or net into the pool and catching something to eat. Jo and I were lamenting the fact that we didn't have canoes or a tinny to row about in during our visit as it is just beautiful.

There's a small walking path and a nice widening of the river to go for a paddle (we did and it was lovely) if you are so inclined. Don't be scared off by the giant Glenelg Water Rat either. He's a friendly fellow who is not averse to being petted by the kids :) You'll find him out near the toilet block.

Camp fires are permitted so pack the BBQ for lunch or stick around for dinner and camp the night before travelling on to the next lot of caches. I was sitting by the campfire with the Geofamily asleep in the camper trailer while writing this description, the wind rustling through the gum leaves and the water birds hooting and honking on the Glenelg River.

It's best to be self sufficient though as the toilets are at the time of lodging this, out of order due to vandalism :(

The best entry into the river is from the Hamilton (south) end of the reserve and the best camping spots are at the Horsham (north) end with the toilet block and the Water Rat splitting the two.

It's a fantastic spot if you are looking for a free camp while out in the far west of Victoria.

Swaps included at initial hide:
1. Bicycle Victoria Sticker
2. Workman
3. Snake
4. Squid
5. Crayfish
6. Travel Bug "Harvey"
