Geocache Description:

Earliest reference to Kebelj castle dates to 1251. At that time the owner was Tymo de Gybel. It was on the highest altitude amongst all the castles of Pohorje, and all that is left from it today is the tower, measuring 9 m in diameter and its walls 2,5m thick. It was build in Romanesque style. Today the remains are called Zajcev castle, after the owner of the land. Main part of the castle was located 200m to the west, where there was also a chapel, located on the edge of the steep slope.

Kebelj castle was a part of Krško fief. It was handed over by the bishop of Krško to the counts Herman and Viljem of Celje, along with the Kebelj office, that was most probably in the bottom tower (Zbegov castle). In 1441 it fell into the possession of Neža of Stunberg as an inheritance of her brother Friederik of Ptuj. Both castles were sold in 1449 to Konradu Pesnicar by the Leutold of Stunberg. The owners in 1485, Sigmund and Henrik Prueschenski, added this two castles to the Štetenberg property. There are some records indicating, that the local cort was placed in this abandoned castle in 1490, thus this are ruins for quite some time.
