Ehemaliger Steinbruch (Panorama nach NE) an den "Pferdeköpfen". Geotop in der Wippraer-Zone Devon.
Die Wippraer Zone durchzieht das hier behandelte Gebiet in einem Band in Richtung Osten von Breitungen bis über die Kohlenstraße nach Gorenzen. Sie besteht aus metamorphen Gesteinen. Fahren wir auf der L 230 von Grillenberg nach Wippra, so kreuzen wir die Kohlenstraße. Ihr Name geht auf jene Zeit zurück, als auf ihr die Holzkohle aus den Waldgebieten in die Hüttenorte transportiert wurde. Direkt an der Kreuzung befindet sich ein Parkplatz. Von dort aus gelangt man in fünf Minuten zum ehemaligen Steinbruch an den Pferdeköpfen. Im Steinbruch ist Grünschiefer aufgeschlossen. Gewonnen wurden verschiedene Sortimente für den Straßenbau bevor der Abbau um das Jahr 1960 endete. Auf dem Weg zum Steinbruch kommen wir an einem geodätischen Punkt vorbei. Er ist einer von fünf Punkten, die in den 1960er Jahren an verschiedenen Stellen im Harz gesetzt wurden, um die Harzhebung zu beobachten.

Grünschiefer ist ein oft grünlich gefärbtes Gestein, das eine Metamorphose bei relativ niedrigen Temperaturen und niedrigen bis mittleren Drücken erlitten hat. Grünschiefer sind typische regionalmetamorphe Gesteine, die vor allem aus basischen magmatischen Ausgangsmaterialien entstehen. Der Name geht auf das meist deutliche schiefrige Gefüge der Gesteine zurück und die oft vorhandene, typische grünlich Färbung.
Wichtige mitteleuropäische Vorkommen sind die Ophiolithzonen Zermatt-Saas-Fee und im Aostatal.
Die grünliche Farbe wird vor allem durch Epidot, Aktinolith (ein Amphibol) und Minerale der Chloritgruppe hervorgerufen, die aber nicht immer vorherrschend sind, so dass nicht jeder Grünschiefer auch wirklich deutlich grünlich gefärbt ist. Grünschiefer sind die kennzeichnenden Gesteine der so genannten Grünschiefer-Fazies.

Green slate is an often greenish coloured rock which has suffered a metamorphosis at relatively low temperatures and low to middle pressure.
