Geocache Description:

Small container holding log only on the track bed of the East Somerset Railway overlooking the park about a quarter of a mile from the old station site.

Parking is available in Park Road. The cache site is reached by entering the town's beautiful Collett Park.

Please be careful finding and replacing as the old track bed is now a busy foot and cycle path.

Bring your own pen or pencil to log.

The station opened in 1858 as the western terminus of the line from Witham Friary. In 1862 the East Somerset line was extended westwards to Wells. In 1878 an end on junction was constructed with the Cheddar Valley Railway which then made through running between Witham and Yatton possible.

For most of its existance the station was known simply as Shepton Mallet.
The suffix came into being in 1949 to differentiate the station from the town's other station,Shepton Mallet Charlton Road (which gained its suffix in October 1883) on the Somerset and Dorset Railway whose station was much less conveniently situated for the town centre.

The station closed to passenger traffic with the withdrawal of services between Yatton and Witham on 9th September 1963. Goods traffic ceased shorly after though trains continued to pass through up to 1969 with stone from Dulcote quarry.

The main station building remained in use until only recently by a cleaning supplies company.

The site has now been cleared for re development but some of the dismantled station structure has been stored for possible re use if the preserved ESR manages to extend its line from Mendip Vale station which is situated close to the outskirts of the town.
