The council suggests it will take 5-6 hrs to complete the track. But, I would say its a lot less than that. It took us about 1.45 hrs to go up & back, to the "batcave". (running where we could). However, you may want to "make a day of it", & enjoy a picnic & a swim along the way. Be sure to follow the signs to the "platinum mines". From the "Argyle rocks" junction, take the left path. & again at the top junction take the left path (sign reads "platinum mines 1/2 hr). The cache is a large army ammo tin & is located at the 1st "horizontal mine". GPS coverage can be a little scratchy here - just follow the clue. We recommend you take warm clothes & raingear, as the weather can change quickly in the ranges. It is also recommended that you stick to the formed tracks, as there may be undiscovered mine holes in the area. A torch would be useful to see into the mines, however, you are not able to enter very far, so don't expect any great caving expedition. The track can be muddy in parts, especially in the winter. The caves & tracks are home to many native "critters", including the carnivorous NZ land snail. But, sadly, no bats! So, we decided we needed to add one - just for a little fun! We have included in the cache container a simple "bat costume" for you to put on, so you can strike your best "batman/woman pose, outside the "batcave", & include a picture with your log. This is not compulsory in order to claim your find - just a little extra fun. Go on, you know you want too! At least you shouldn't get muggled up here!
