This is the 3rd of 3 caches we have placed to follow on from the "sledge track- swimming hole" cache. The start of the "Sledge track" can be found at the end of Kahuterewa Rd - about 20 mins drive from "Palmy"
The council suggests it will take 5-6 hrs to complete the track. But, I would say its a lot less than that. It took us about 2 hrs to go up & back, to the 1st vertical mine. (running where we could) However, you may want to "make a day of it", & enjoy a picnic & a swim along the way. Be sure to follow the signs to the "platinum mines". from the Argyle rocks junction. Take the left path at the top junction (sign reads "platinum mines 1/2 hr). Just passed the "batcave" or 1st horizontal mine, is another junction with some great views. Take the left path again for a short 2 min walk to the next mine (& cache). There are several other mine shafts a short walk further on. We recommend you take warm clothes & raingear, as the weather can change quickly in the ranges. It is also recommended you stay on the formed tracks, as there may be undiscovered mine holes in the area. A torch would be useful to see into the mines, however, you are not able to enter very far, so don't go expecting any great caving expeditions. The track can be muddy in parts, especially in the winter.
