Of all the local lore and urban legends that have seeped out of this tract of woods, perhaps none is more ominous or reeks of terror and mystery more than the story of “Hellacious” Hezekiah Boone, the man of many talents, none of which stood to benefit mankind in the least.
From his humble beginnings as a poor farmer to his service on Quantrill’s Raiders in the civil war, this native son of the South was bred to raise mayhem. After his bloody and notorious time as a rebel raider, he took up preaching, becoming a born again religious zealot and traveling in a covered wagon through the dusty Midwest of the 1870’s. Passing the word of the lord and selling blessed elixirs made his name.
Presently he settled in Illinois and started a small congregation. Here things turned dark and foreboding. His church was small and nestled in these woods far from prying eyes. Word got around that arcane rituals were enacted with feverish adoration that his teachings revolved around the cult of the snake. Heathen rites where whispered about and his demeanor became ever more charged. Around that time the disappearance of village children began. As fear and suspicion rose ever higher, the village elders stormed the woods.
Hezekiah had vanished. All that remained was the small church, which contained a small alter and a metal brazier. Within its ashes were scattered the scorched bones of children and dotting the grounds around the church were the dried remains of sheaded snake skin. These skins were said to have adorned at one time what seemed to be very large snakes indeed. In disgust and shame, the townspeople burned to the ground the church and disposed of all evidence of what once stood there.
The story however only continues on even after Hezekiah vanished forever. Inexplicably over the years so many children have been bitten by snakes in these very woods. Even though people have scoured these wooded areas, no snakes have ever been found. Even more strangely, the bites and venom and description from children bitten, indicate poisonous snakes not native to this area. Also from these cursed woods come the reports, again from children only, of high-pitched chanting echoing through the branches, the sighting of flames glimpsed that can never be tracked to a location and lastly, the piercing screams of children in mortal pain. It is seemingly easy to say that the cult of the snake still slithers through these cursed woods.
