The Old Railroad
This old railroad belonged to the New York Central Railroad,
on
the Niagara Falls Branch. The railroad was chartered on May
15,
1837, opened in 1852, and operated until the early 1980s. The next
stop to the west was Adam's Basin and the next stop to the east was
South Greece.
Even though the railroad helped carry shipments,
Spencerport
remained mainly a canal town. Although the line has long
since
stopped, the railroad depot still stands at 131 Martha Street.
The Cache
Going along the trail, this structure caught my eye and I called
dibs for a hide. As with other caches in this series, be prepared
for mud. UPDATE: When we made this hide, the "mystery box" was a
big, metal cupboard-like box attached to the post. Revisiting the
area, it seems the box has vanished. An ultimate mystery
indeed.
The Other Info
We suggest parking near Union St. in glamorous downtown
Spencerport if you plan to do a few caches in the series.
There's
plenty of parking and easy access to the railroad bed. Do
your best to stay off the bridge, it's falling apart and
really
isn't all that safe. Also, there's lots of CITO opportunity
if
you're into that sort of thing.
