Historic Rainbow Valley Ranch Park & Grab. Accessible from road. Do not trespass or climb fence. Use stealth if other cars are visible. This was once a proud thriving ranch with show winning registered Angus Cattle owned & run by the Polston family under the “P lazy P” brand. Note the old flag pole/lightening rod in pasture visible from the cache. I believe this is the same pole erected after a horse or a couple cows were killed there by lightning about 50 years ago.
Rainbow Valley Ranch was owned by the Polston family of Tulsa. Ray was a big oil man and gentleman rancher. During it's heyday in the 1960's he raised and showed prize registered Angus cattle. They put on huge tent sales & barbeques attracting the upper crust oil barons & ranchers of the day. Note the welded pipe fencing rather than barb wire is due to the family’s pipelining heritage. The fences have weathered much better than the other neglected structures. Ray’s two sons Jim & Bruce kept the ranch alive in joint ownership until Rays surviving second wife Tillie's death when the family had to sell due to the inheritance tax burden. Bruce lived on the ranch for some time starting his family there but later relocated to Dallas going to work for Arco oil I believe. Jim moved around during his career with Amoco oil and managed the ranch from afar in Kansas City. (Where I met & married his beautiful daughter Dorothy) She & I lived on the ranch around 1970 after college waiting out my impending draft induction. This ranch holds a lot of dear memories. The famous Charolais bull Sam we brought in to add some hybrid vigor to our Angus stock...Some great cutting horses "Beauty" was the most talented. "Dirt Dobber" who was actually a gift to the ranch from the famous Bell ranch of Texas. “Johnny Chee” like a big lovable puppy until you got on his back was brought in from Wyoming, and Gene Swares mule headed horse "George" who threw me off more than I want to remember.
The ranch was basically two sections with a little more land east of this cache than the west but this cache is pretty well centered north to south of the property boundaries. To the east was the Fitzgerald pasture (long term leased) but most of the rest was owned by the Polstons. Numerous stock ponds hold the best fishing you will find anywhere. To the northwest is a knob that I believe was called "Tater Hill" & rumored to be an Indian burial ground. The pond near the Otterly Ridiculous Cache was the "pump house pond" as we pumped water from this pond up to the two houses & barns. This pasture was planted in Bermuda grass and produced some heavy but high quality hay. Farther east up the slight hay meadow hill is the famous "Perch Pond” that had a fence running through the middle of it. Fishing here was always at its best around Memorial Day! If you want permission to fish nowadays you need to contact Mr. Houser in Coweta but he doesn’t generally allow it. (Will post more old photos as I find them to commemorate the past glory).It looks like they are running mainly white face blacks here now days. I couldn’t see any brands. When we had the registered Angus we used freeze branding using big brass irons in buckets of dry ice & alcohol. We put the P lazy P on one flank and a 2-3 digit number on the other. When we did it right the hair never fell out, it just grew out white. Enjoy & post any historic notes you know about the area!
