Sea Mills, Berkeley Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

muddypad: It has gone missing, got the nettle stings on my hands and legs to prove I checked it out today. Lost a lot of interest lately and I think it would be nice for someone new and local to here to have a chance of placing a cache in the area.

Geocache Description:

In the 1086 Domesday Book, it is written that Berkeley (or Bechelai) had 2 mills.

Sea Mills was a Flour Mill powered by water.

As you can see there is more changes taking place at the historic Mill, so take some photos now :-)

It is suggested that this site was one of the mills and further upsteam, on the Little River Avon there is a farm called Browns Mill to be the other.
The course of the river has been changed by man in recent years but it used to flow directly beneath the mill.

Over the years the mill has been known as Sextons Mill (1200AD), Castle Mill (1220AD), Town Mill, and both Barclay Mill and New Mill (around 1575AD) along with its current name of Sea Mills.

To the rear of Sea Mills, (just in front of the cache location) was a wharf where boats could tie up from pre 1639AD up until the early 1900's.
