Just a simple park-and-grab cache on a high point of the South Gippsland Highway. Small screw top container, NO PEN so bring one! Watch out for muggles on the path!
This once majestic stand of pines now stands as testament to the destructive power of fire.
Just over two years ago, this part of the SGH was engulfed in flames that were sparked (so it is believed) by someone using a grinder on a TFB day, or day of Total Fire Ban. Not limited to these pines, the dead row of shrubs over the highway and to the north were taken out, and you can still see the remnants of the original blackened fence posts over the road. There were also trees along the median strip of the highway, but these have been removed. Notice how the native gums have survived...
The fire raced across the landfill area to the north east, and took out four new homes on the northern boundary. You may be wondering, if you're a local like me, why this event didn't make the headlines. Thats because of the date: February 7, 2009.
Black Saturday.
