Geocache Description:

Third in a series along the Cranberry Tri- River Rail- Trail, at the Richwood B&O Depot

Cranberry Tri- River Rail- Trail is a 16.5 mile trail that begins in the city of Richwood WV and follows the old Baltimore & Ohio rail line along the Cherry and Gauley rivers, and crossing the mouth of the Cranberry river. B & O was one of the oldest, and the first 'common carrier' railroad in the United States. There is a lot of information on the net about B & O.

Much of this trail runs along the western edge of the Monongahela National Forrest and, for now, terminates near the 640 foot "Saras Tunnel". The first six miles of the trail pass through town and adjacent to residents' yards. The recommended trail head is in Holcomb WV. This series will show you some parts of the trail that you may otherwise decide to skip.

More information on the CTRRT may be found at The West Virginia Rails-to-Trails Council

Richwood B&O Depot is one of the 'official' trail heads, although current signage directs you to the intersection of Rt. 39 & Bridge Ave.
The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad was completed to Richwood in the spring of 1901 and provided services for Cherry River Boom & Lumber Company, Cherry River Paper Company, Wm. F. Mosser Company (largest sole leather tannery in the world), Steel-Wallace Corporation (largest clothes pin factory in the world ), J. O. Westcott & Son (broom handle and chair round factory), and others. In 1929, the Richwood depot handled more passenger and freight business than any other depot in the Charleston Division of B&O, except Charleston.

The depot is now the home of the Nicholas Co. Magistrate and the Richwood Convention and Visitors Bureau.  The CVB is open 8 to 5 Monday through Saturday, stop in and check out  the hundreds of  photos and other memorabilia, or just say hi.
