Geocache Description:

Yup, park is under construction to mitigate the "contaminants" from the park's landfill past. I suspect this was a Bostonian attempt to discredit the Yankees... Regardless, temp cache (small bison tube) placed just north of the park along the riverwalk. Need to approach from North. Also, the hint is quite specific as I'd like to avoid DNFs on the temp cache given high muggle area. If you prefer to find without the aid of the hint, well, don't look at the hint.

Welcome to Veterans Park! There are a number of interesting features in and around this park that caused me some consternation in naming this cache. For starters, there is a plaque on the western edge of Veterans Pak that commemorates the founding in 1640 of the New Netherland plantation of David Pietersen de Vries. Called "Vriessendael," this plantation was the first known colony in Bergen County. It only lasted 3 years before being destroyed in a war with the local Hackensack and Tappan indians.

It is also the site of a 9/11 memorial and massive American flag which can be seen easily from across the river in Manhattan.

But for me, the paramount fact is that the eastern half of the park would not exist at all were it not for that venerable Bronx Institution: Yankee Stadium. For it was here in 1922 that landfill was imported from the construction site of the original Yankee Stadium. Without that, this park would be still be river.
