Geocache Description:

Smiths Falls Then and Now is a series that I've wanted to start for
a couple years now. Having done some "Getting to know ....." caches
in the Ottawa Valley, I figured with the history of Smiths Falls,
we deserved some too. The historic info about the locations in this
series has been obtained from books about Smiths Falls. Very
interesting stuff.

This photograph in the gallery was taken a year after RCA Victor opened its Smiths
Falls plant and employed some 125 men and women. Eventually, some
350 men and women were employed in three shifts manufacturing long
play records. The production of these luxury items in the postwar
decades reflected the growing prosperity of most of Smiths Falls
families as part of the larger bouyant Canadian economy. The
closing of the RCA Victor plant in 1978 gave rise to fears that the
town was doomed to see replays of the closing of Frost & Wood.
