Description
During the dismantling of Bristol Castle under order of Cromwell
between 1654 and 1656, records indicate that several people who
strongly opposed the dismantling ‘went underground’
quite literally as they hid in the limited remains of the castle,
living off of scraps and without light, they became known as the
Brigows.
By the eighteenth century the castle had been replaced by
streets of timber-framed houses and shops and became the main
shopping centre for 250 years, the castle remembered only in street
names and the descendants of the Brigows who still eeked out a
hidden life between the castle remains and the wooden houses.
All this ended in the air raids of November 1940,January
’41 and August ’42. Because of the frailty brought
about by living underground the elder Brigows were forced into the
relative safety of the countryside, leaving only a small group of
child Brigows behind. After the war, it was decided the castle area
was inadequate, and the shopping centre was rebuilt in nearby
Broadmead.
Noticing the area fall back to disuse and transform into an open
space, the last remaining young descendants of the Brigows saw
their opportunity to rebuild their beloved castle, and over the
course of three moonless nights in November 2001 the new castle
appeared from nowhere within the bounds of castle park, built using
techniques the young Brigows had witnessed in previous years.
In order to quash local concerns about a group of semi-human
mini castle builders, the local council claimed responsibility for
building the new castle, but those of us ‘in the know’
are very aware who built it and why.
Legend states that the Brigows left a special item nearby which
only the elite can find to prove that they built the new castle, to
date nobody has found it, but on a lunchtime outing last week I
stumbled upon this clue blowing around in the park, I wonder if it
will lead to the item?
Warning: The cache can be very easily retrieved from a
place of safety, there is no need to climb, balance, hang, swing,
jump or cha cha slide in order to get to it.
