Geocache Description:

Aces of Elmore County

A memorial to the fine men from our county that fought for our country in the air.


Our first hide. I spend some time at this airport.
The manager knows about the hide. So if your challenged about what your doing, let him know.
April 28th, 2012 will be a bad day as it is the local EAA chapters Fly In day.
Lots of flying muggles will be present as well as non-flying muggle kids getting free flights.
More information can be found at www.YoungEagles.com Over 1.6 million kids flown!
Cache contains balsa gliders for caching kids, let me know you took one so I know when I need to restock it.

Aces of Elmore County

1st Lt. Hoyt Arnold "Curly" Eason
Born Aug, 8, 1914 in Eclectic. P-38 "Lighting" pilot in 39th Pursuit Squadron, 35th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force, Southwest Pacific. Became first P-38 Ace in the Pacific on Dec. 31, 1942 over New Guinea.
MIA in Battle of Bismark Sea on Mar. 3, 1943. Earned the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross.

1st Lt. Henry Smith "Hank" Rudolph
Born Oct. 18, 1923 in Wetumpka. P-51 "Mustang" pilot in 353rd Fighter Squadron, 254th Fighter Group, 9th Air Force, Northern Europe. Became an Ace on Apr. 2, 1945 over Bavaria, Germany.
Flew in last Allied fighter mission in Europe. Earned the Silver Star and Distinguished Flying Cross.

Monument was placed by the Eagle Scout Project of John Stuart Tilley, Troop 51 - Fall 2006
