Geocache Description:

This multicache takes us on a pleasant walk around wallingford, including both some well-known spots and a couple of quieter corners. It shouldn’t take more than an hour to do, and makes a nice circular walk starting and finishing near the middle of town.

Cache is a small ammo box with plenty of room for treasure. At time of hiding, it contained: Sonic Heroes Gamecube came TIger Woods PGA Tour 2001 PC game Skoda Fabia VRS postcard A Pen-torch A small yo-yo A balloon Four small yellow plastic skittles A small empty CO2 canister A few small american coins Marvin the Monkey TB (new!) Agnes TB Co-ordinates given are for the first waypoint; parking can be found at N051 35.933 W001 07.415. Waypoint 1: N 051 35.828 W 001 07.372 St Leonard's church is tucked away slightly away from the middle of Wallingford. It has norman origins but was altereed in victorian times. The garden has been left over to wild plants and flowers in parts. You are looking somewhere in the grounds for the grave of a William Glendining. Find the date of his death: this is August AB CD60. Waypoint 2: N 051 3(A+B).0(C+D)4 W 001 0(D-C).8C5 From the gate of the church, turn left and walk along Thames street, across the small (be careful) and down leonards lane. Keep following this path until you get to the large expanse of grass called the Kinecroft. This is where the Wallingford bunkfest festival is held each year. From here go to the above co-ordinates, which will involve you crossing the main road. Here you will find a fine victorian school which was recently converted to private apartments. The old master's house lies to the west of the main school building. An inscription states that it was constructed to celebrate queen victoria's reign. The year of its construction is also recorded. This is 1EFG. from here, walk east along the high street, staying on the opposite side of the road from the Kinecroft. After a short walk you will find on your left the large metal gates of another piece of land which was gifted to the town of Wallingford. The year that it was officially opened is 1HIJ. Waypoint 3:N 051 36.(E-G)(G)1 W 001 0(H-2).(J+3)2(Ix2) This original inscriptions on this monument to fallen soldiers are hard to read; however one face details the year that it was removed from its original location. The information you are looking for, however, is on the north face of the monument, where there is a carved portcullis. Count the number of horizontal bars (K) and vertical bars (L) on the carving. From here, walk to the diagonally opposite corner of the field, keeping the black pavillion buildings on your right. In the very corner, a footpath leads though the trees and down across a ditch to join another footpath. Go right (east), and you will eventually meet a main road. Don't cross, but walk left (north) on this side until you reach the gates of a house with a large garden. The name of the house is written in three words on the wall. Count the number of times the letters A, R and E occur in the name and add them together to get M. Waypoint 4: N 051 36.(L-K)83 W 001 07.2(M-3)4 Just along from and opposite the house you can cross the road (again be careful) and climb over the fence into Castle Field. As the name suggests, this field was the site of the medieval Wallingford Castle, a large and important castle which was destroyed by Parliament in 1652. At the above co-ordinates you will find one of the few remaining freestanding chunks of the castle walls. This side of the wall (which should be standing between you and the river) has a number of postholes which probably housed wooden beams. Count them as they are N. A short walk down the bank in the direction of the river (east) and through a gate takes you to a small pond which was landscaped from a part of the original castle moat. An information board explains a little about the kind of plants and animals which live in this environment. Count the number of Damselflies in the picture. This is P. Waypoint 5: (N 051 3(P+N).N39 W 001 0(Px3).9N0 This waypoint takes you right down to the river's edge, onto the thames path. A red notice details the fishing restrictions on this stretch of water. Count the number of times the following letters are found on the sign: Q, R and S. Insert these into the final waypoint to find the cache. Waypoint 6: N 051 36.6QQ S 001 07.Q7(R+S) The cache is set off of a footpath in pleasant farmland, and is a brown 30 cal ammo box with room for swaps. Please hide it back where you found it. From the cache location, a clear path leads back to the river, and a short walk south back down the thames path will bring you back into the middle of town near the parking location. Do get in touch with any comments and inaccurate co-ordinates etc,
