Geocache Description:

All Saints Piddletrenthide

Co-ordinates given are for finding the information to retrieve the cache itself.

Piddletrenthide. Originally the village was built around All Saints but a fire in 1645 destroyed much of the village. During the rebuilding the villagers favoured building it along the banks of the River Piddle. A ready source of water in case it happened again.
The church was restored in 1852-53 by John Hicks. He was the architect who taught young Thomas Hardy the trade which took him to St Juliot’s in Cornwall where he met his first wife, Emma Gifford.
Looking at the outside of the church you are struck by the many not so friendly looking gargoyles that are on the walls of the church. Note to the sundial above the porch door does it tell the right time I think not. The internal doorway in the 15th C porch is the oldest part of the church, it is 12th C. The ornate tower was built in 1487 whilst the North and South walls of the church are about 15th C.
