I was inspired by two local geocachers (Biker64 and 68TR250) to place this one. Please blame them for any frustrations this puzzle/mystery geocache may produce for you. They are seeking Benchmarks and placing geocaches next to them. They are calling this "2FER".
These interesting areas hold a historic value for surveyors and we (geocachers) in return get two smileys, one for the cache and one for the benchmark.
One of my favorite discovery's from benchmark hunting is observing an etching from a 1813 (200 years old!) in a rock, in the corner of three states. I was standing in the current of a river and taking pictures of the moss covered etchings and wondering how far the benchmark you seek was from here. My GPS said it was at 219.576 degrees.
Another favorite benchmark of mine is Chimney Rock. A benchmark I discovered while visiting a natural tourist attraction. After making several digital photographs of our group, I wondered where the benchmark you seek was from here. I knew it was at 225.206 degrees and I thought I could see it from my advantage point while visiting the Chimney Rock benchmark.
It's interesting why the surveyors of those days put their benchmarks at locations of high elevations, along roads in the right-of-ways and at natural land features.
If you are an avid benchmark hunter, you know that sometimes you have to read the descriptions of the benchmark pages to gather the necessary information to know where to look once you are in the area of the benchmark that you have targeted. The coordinates my not at all be accurate, but "close". I guess WAAS was not so popular when these benchmarks were created.
Since geocaches are placed to be found, and IF you need a hint, ask Biker64, he gave me the manual for this puzzle.
Disclaimers:
1. I have permission from both geocachers to list their names on this geocache.
2. This benchmark is like most that I have found, located at the highest point of the immediate area, on ROW, and the coordinates you have are more than likely not accurate, but they will get you to the location and there you can seek out the benchmark.
3. Like those 2fer's, this geocache is there at the location of the BM. You are looking for a surveyor duct taped neon pink geocache, easily to be identified.
4. Parking is available at location of the benchmark, off of the road for safety.
5. D/T ratings subject to change due to feed back.
6. Everything should be true.
7. Any hints/clues/stated advantages/innuendo's in a found posting can result in ostrichism from the geocaching community due to negative conversations about you at geocaching events. Please help keep the integrity of the hide and D/T ratings.
4/5/15 If your location for the geocache is in a body of water, enter the coordinates in the checker. If your coordinates are across the road from a pond, it's likely you have used the correct programing and have the correct coordinates.
