George Hopkins
1818 - 1905
George Hopkins and his wife Margaret Simmonds and their baby son James emigrated from Sussex, England to Ontario, Canada in 1844 on the ship, Burrel. By 1850 they were pioneering on 50A of virgin bush in Lot 2 Concession 6, Uxbridge Township.
By 1861 they had cleared all but 10A and were growing wheat, oats, peas, carrots, turnips and potatoes, and they owned a yoke of oxen, a team of horses, 11 cattle, 16 sheep and 5 hogs (from the Agricultural Census) They were also busy raising a family of 9 children on that small farm.
You will find the remains of the homestead if you walk for about 15 or 20 min. (depending on the season) along the south trail from the parking lot at East Duffins Headwaters - Aggregate Pit Trailhead on Concession 6 south of Highway 21 in Uxbridge Township.
The geocache is a small lock'n'lock hidden in the foundation of one of the buildings.
Sept. 3/12 My guess is - the foundation you are looking for was probably the site of the first homestead. It sits a little apart from the later building site and on higher ground.
Congrats to Hooligansx2 and Mythic Lion Man for the FTF.
