Not an official Flash Mob, but if you're late you'll miss it.
The time is 5:20 PM, a half an hour before Sunset, Sunday October
23.
Every year, twice a year, the Sun setting in the West can be seen
reflecting off the Prudential Building in Boston some 42 miles to
the East. It's quite a sight, looks like the Sun rising in the East
but in the Evening, or the Sun setting in the East totally against
reality.
The coordinates are for the spot that has the best view. Looking
out over the Church. From either of the two benches here. Or bring
your own chair. And of course bring your own binoculars if you
would like to get a closeup view of Boston, but it's best and
safest to not do that when the Sun is reflecting from there.
There is no real good parking for this. Park up by the library 775
feet away. The view from there would be great but the other Church
blocks the view from there and also from inside the library on the
top floor.
The Event will be held rain or shine, hope for the shine. And hope
for a High Pressure front to the West for an all around long view
in every direction. And of course, low humidity is desirable for
longest visibility.
It kind of happens on this date plus or minus 3 or 4 days. The
actual best date is Tuesday, but the Event will be Sunday. The spot
of best view slowly moves North in the Fall and South in the
Spring. In a few weeks time it would be visible from the top of
Mount Wachusett. I'd hold the Event there, but can't guaranty the
gate being open at or after sunset, and this year they are doing
road work. Plus it's not necessarily free to drive up, it kind of
is during the week with an honorary contribution.
I will be here the Saturday, Sunday (the Event), possibly Monday
and definitely Tuesday (the conjugate anniversary of when I
actually saw this in 2002), but you have to be here during the
Event.
Late news, the town administrator has said that roadside parking
right near the spot is OK, but limited to a very few. Please only
people who need to do so (handicapped) use that. A select few could
possibly park at the Church, but not on the Saturday as that will
be full of parishioners around Sunset.
