He alone is great who by an act heroic renders a real service.
Inscription on a tombstone in Magnolia Cemetery.
Tom the Tramp died nine years after the Great Storm in Galveston that killed 6,000 people and from which Tom rescued a child of a family while they were vacationing at the beach.
The family adopted Tom. They never knew his last name or when he was born. They had him buried on the family plot.
