Port Mandurah Canals Series
1990 saw the start of the construction of the canal development on the Western side of the Mandurah Estuary on what used to be farmland. In 6 stages over the following years the area was transformed from farmland to multimillion dollar home land. In between the mansions there are vestiges of times past.
This series of caches will take you on a circular route of about 3.5 km that visits these islands of history that have been preserved in amongst the canals.
Park near the bridge at S32 32.165' E115 42.977' and do the series then take a leisurely stroll over the bridge to one of the many coffee shops on the foreshore as a reward.

Winjan’s Camp.
This largely unvisited park in Halls Head is where George Winjan camped in the bush behind Sutton’s Farm. There were once many old trees on the site, particularly tuarts, but most of them are now dead or in poor condition. A natural soak is located near WP2 where the paperbark tree still stands, and it was here that Winjan once lived with his wife, Susan (or Sarah) in a shanty, probably built for him by George Sutton.
Known under the aboriginal name of Yaburgurt or Wittungit, he was called George by his European friends. George Winjan Senior is believed to have ruled the whole South-West tribes, with Pinjarra as his headquarters though Mandurah was his birthplace. Old Winjan died in 1884, and the younger George Winjan, who survived the Battle of Pinjarra as a young child, became the leader of the remainder of his people, also earning the respect of Mandurah’s European community. He died in 1915 and his grave site is in Christ’s Church, Mandurah.
Take time to look at the various artworks surrounding this area which celebrate the life of Wittungit and his people.
