This cache is located in a semi-remote area of the Argus Range
Water Canyon is a large canyon that heads up into the Argus range where the 178 drops down into Panamint Valley. A side canyon leaves the North side of Water Canyon about 0.5 miles into the canyon. Follow this side canyon about 5-6 miles up into the Argus range to the cache site.
You've got 3 options for getting to the cache site: hike in, dirtbike in, or 4x4. The BLM periodically closes Water Canyon to vehicles, so the decision could be made for you - a longish hike of around 11 miles round trip. You may want to call the BLM ahead of time, so you know what to expect. As of 4/2/11, it's open to vehicles.
Any of the the 3 options would make for a very nice day. If you do 4x4, the hardest part is the initial part of Water Canyon and the first couple miles up the side canyon. You'll want 4x4 and high clearance. The upper part of the canyon is easier. Overall, I think it would be pretty adventurous, but I am a wimp when it comes to 4x4ing. (As of 12.07.2012, I've been told by a couple buddies the road really isn't that bad to drive. Guess I really am a wimp!)
There are nice views of Panamint Valley and the Argus crest from the cache site. If you're lucky maybe you'll see some wild horses, as I was fortunate enough to see.
