Die auf 347 ü.d.M. gelegene Ortschaft blickt hinab auf den
Küstenstreifen zwischen Kap Vado und der Landzunge von Maiolo, vor
dem sich die kleine Insel Bergeggi erhebt. Am Ufer öffnet sich die
gleichnamige, 37 Meter lange und 17 Meter breite Höhle, die von der
Jungsteinzeit bis in die römische Epoche bewohnt war. Bergetti
gehörte einst zum Territorium der Bischöfe von Savona, welche 992
auf der Insel ein Kloster errichten ließen, das aufgrund seiner
Lage und seiner Befestigungen den Raubzügen der Sarazenen im 10.
bzw. 11. Jahrhundert standzuhalten vermochte. 1385 gelangte es an
Genua und wurde zur Deportationskolonie. Aus dem Mittelalter
stammen die beiden Wachtürme in Torre del Mare bzw. auf der Insel.
Die Pfarrkirche San Martino, deren Wiederaufbau auf den Fundamenten
eines älteren Bauwerks 1706 abgeschlossen war, birgt ein Gemälde
toskanischer Schule aus dem 16. Jahrhundert und Skulpturen von
Maragliano und Lacroix.

Posto a 347 m s.l.m., l'abitato guarda sul tratto di mare che si
estende dal capo di Vado a punta Maiolo, di fronte al quale è
l'isolotto di Bergeggi. In riva al mare si apre la caverna omonima,
lunga 37 m e larga 17, frequentata dal Neolitico all'età romana.
Bergeggi appartenne ai vescovi di Savona che nel 992 fecero
costruire il monastero che sorse sull'isola, e nei sec. X-XI,
grazie alla sua posizione e alle fortificazioni, potè resistere
alle incursioni saracene. Passò a Genova nel 1385 e divenne colonia
di deportati. All'epoca medievale risalgono due torri di
avvistamento: una a Torre del Mare e l'altra sull'isola. La chiesa
parrocchiale di San Martino, ricostruzione compiuta nel 1706 su un
edificio precedente, conserva una tela cinquecentesca di scuola
toscana e sculture del Maragliano e del Lacroix.

Located 347 meters or 1139 feet above sea level, the town overlooks
the stretch of sea between Capo di Vado and Punta Maiolo, where the
islet of Bergeggi lies just off shore. On the coast is set the cave
of the same name, 37 or 121 feet long and 17 meters or 56 feet
wide, inhabited from the Neolithic period to the Roman era.
Bergeggi belonged to the bishops of Savona, who in 992 had a
monastery built on the island. Thanks to its position and
fortifications, this was able to resist the Saracen raids. The
region came under Genoese rule in 1385 and became a colony of
deportees. Two lookout towers date from the Middle Ages: one at
Torre del Mare and the other on the island. The parish church of
San Martino, reconstructed in its entirety in 1706 over a
preexisting building, houses a sixteenth-century canvas of the
Tuscan school and sculptures by Maragliano and Lacroix.
