Geocache Description:

Traditional cache along canal system.

This is a traditional cache found along a strip of brushy area along an irrigation canal system in the Mid Valley. Canal systems in the Rio Grande Valley played a vital role in the development of agriculture in the area. In the early 1900's, pumping stations helped divert water from the Rio Grande through an elaborate irrigation system. The agricultural success of canal companies in the area resulted in an influx of farmers to the Rio Grande and as a result, these bountiful harvests propelled the Rio Grande Valley to the forefront of Texas agriculture by the mid-20th century and earned the region a reputation as the "winter garden" of Texas.
