Geocache Description:

The seat of Marion County, Main Street Fairmont is a lively organization that is committed to revitalizing and preserving the historic district of Fairmont. Perhaps one of the organization’s biggest achievements is the renovation of several historic buildings into a high-tech office space at the town’s Veteran’s Square. This project has created retail and commercial space, a memorial to honor the veterans of Marion County, and also housing facilities for parts of Fairmont State University, the WV Small Business Development Center, and has added over 100 jobs to downtown. The entire town of Fairmont is rich in history, making it a perfect candidate for Main Street status. The original town’s nickname was “The Home of the Original Pepperoni Roll” and is also home of the nation’s first Father’s Day service, something that West Virginia is honored to have. Today, Fairmont retains much of its charm and is home to unique businesses such as photography studios, craft stores, fashion boutiques, coffee houses, and specialty eateries. Annual events include the Holiday Historic House Tours, Feast of the Seven Fishes Festival, and Farmer’s Market days in the summer. With a town nestled on a riverbank, Fairmont’s new nickname, “The Friendly City,” is right on par with this historic and charming Main Street and describes the atmosphere perfectly.
