Geocache Description:

The cache is located close to a crossroads of footpaths near the middle of Wood Street, a bridleway running through the Worcestershire countryside between the village of Guarlford and Malvern Common.

Wood Street is probably Roman in origin. It was used as a saltway for the transportation of salt by packhorse from Droitwich, crossing the river Severn at Clevelode, through Guarlford to Malvern and then running on into Herefordshire through the Malvern Hills at the Wyche cutting.

The hedgerow beside the track is estimated to be 800 years old and there are some unusual trees, notably one of the rarest British trees, the Wild Service Tree (Sorbus torminalis) - (visit link)

If you approach from the Guarlford end of the track, look out for an abandoned red brick building in a field where you leave the tarmac road. It was a Second World War wireless listening station which was once surrounded by aerials, and was used for locating the German V2 rocket base at Peenemunde.

The cache site can be approached from several directions. Parking is easiest on Malvern Common or in the village of Hanley Swan. From any direction it is a walk of about a mile to the cache. From every direction except Guarlford you will have to cross stiles and / or squeeze through narrow gaps. The paths will be muddy after rain so sensible shoes or boots are advised.

Please keep to the well marked public footpaths and park sensibly. Watch out for stock in the surrounding fields, particularly horses if approaching from the Malvern direction.

A map of the area showing the footpaths is here (Click on the icon in the top right of the map screen and then the Open Street Map button): (visit link)
