A nice short hike along the Orange trail at Claude Moore Park that
takes you to the area of a large old oak tree with a story. Please
note the trails can be quite muddy after periods of rain.
Trail maps are available in the nearby Visitor Center. All
trails are very well marked.
Please do not hunt this cache at night and
make sure to observe gate closure times posted at all park
entrances (usually dawn to dusk).
This nearby Southern Red Oak was used as a waypoint on a 1779
survey of the area by John Hough. This map referred to the 442'
hill on the property as "Little Stoney Mountain" and noted that
water draining from this hill entered both Sugarland Run (northeast
corner of the park) and Broad Run (remainder of the Park).
This tree was growing in 1755 when a thousand British soldiers
marched nearby on Vestal's Gap Road, accompanied by George
Washington and Daniel Boone, and stood tall through repeat
occupation of the hill by Union and Confederate signal corps.
Cache placed with permission of park management. Many thanks
to them for providing the background info on the old Oak
tree!
