Geocache Description:

The Beechview-Seldom Seen Greenway
was named after one of the eighty-eight
neighborhoods in the City of Pittsburgh -
Beechview. The area called Seldom Seen
was located in a very secluded area. It was
located in a bowl-shaped valley and was
hidden by the railroad tracks that ran past
the area. Saw Mill Run Boulevard did not
even exist from the bottom of Woodruff Street to the Libery Tunnels. This made it
even more secluded.

The Beechview-Seldom Seen Greenway was
established in 1985 and is approximately
90 acres. The area was once a thriving
German settlement. Today it is a passive
greenspace that is part of the City of Pittsburgh Parks Department.

In 1902 George J. Gould built the great fill
for his Wabash Railroad. This cut off access into Seldom Seen except through the tunnel on what was then called Watkins
Lane - named after an early settler. Look for
the 1902 on the keystone on the face of the tunnel. As you walk thru the tunnel notice
the 21 brick-skewed arches.

Saw Mill Run flows thru the lower part of the greenway where it travels under the Parkway
West to the West End neighborhood and then empties into the Ohil River near the West End Bridge.

Whenever you come to visit the area, make sure that you read the monument that is dedicated to Ed Smuts - a man whose vision
and enthusiasm inspired the greenway program in Pittsburgh.

The area is always in need of some CITO. Please feel free to take a bag from our cache and help keep our greenways clean.
