Wainui Hut
A cache to celebrate Jr B's first overnight tramp into a hut. We
walked in after lunch, and were home for lunch the next day. You
can do it as a half-day tramp. Mountain bikes from Canaan Downs
parking to Wainui Saddle, then a 150 m gentle descent down the
valley.
Wainui Hut is a 1930's hut with a lot of character, and a comfy
night can be had - no mice ;) Open fire for toasted marshmellows
and water from the stream. This is easy access basic hut life and
comes recommended to those who like to give all this a try.
Generously rated as a DOC Standard hut, it requires no bookings,
but you do need to get some hut tickets from DOC (Nelson
Information Center - Millers Acre) if you plan to overnight.
