Geocache Description:

Hidden well, off the track at Ninigret Park, which has turned into our cache planting ground!

Please note this is not in the Wildlife Refuge, but Ninigret Park side. Good place to park is near the bike track.

This location has wonderful history! See related link.
The Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Landing Field was built in 1942 on land purchased from the Hunter harbor summer colony as well as some 600 acres of farmland. It was primarily used as a training field for new pilots to learn night landing and takeoff
techniques and also included a catapult and training deck to simulate carrier take-offs.
President George H.W. Bush trained at “Charlietown” before being sent to the south
Pacific theater in World War II. The base was closed in the early 1970’s and the land transferred to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. It was subsequently divided into the Ninigret Wildlife Refuge, maintained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the 220 acre Ninigret Park
facility maintained by the Town of Charlestown.
