Geocache Description:

This cache is located along the Cumbrian Coastal Railway at Skelly Crag level crossing. It can be done as a quick roadside cache & dash with a layby next to Estuary Electricals. Cache container small so bring a pen/pencil to sign the log. Please be aware there is NO need to cross over the railway line, cache is situated roadside.

This Geocache has been placed at Skelly Crag, a small village cut off from Foxfield by the railway line. The first house you can see on the otherside of the crossing is named Keeper's Cottage. Until 5 years ago the Level Crossing Keepers used to reside in this house. The button when pressed would ring inside the house alerting the keeper there was somebody wanting to cross the railway line. They would get permission from Foxfield duty signalman and open the gates allowing the user to cross. This same system is used today however Network Rail have since installed a cabin opposite for their crossing keepers. There is also a public bridleway across the estuary situated on the otherside of the level crossing which has some stunning views on a nice sunny day!
