The Negishi Airport was operated during 1940-1945 around here. The Negishi Airport was the first private airport for seaplanes. After Japan WWII airplane industry and aviation had been limited in Japan by occupation army. You can see its history on the display board at the ex-front entrance of this airport, around where another geocache GC2PC23 "Mammoth pool" is hidden.
Now Negishi pool center, oil plant and some facilities are remaining there. A taxing canal also remains, but it's within the oil plant area and you can see only from the pool center facility. Instead, the cache point is similar to the canal, actually it's Horiwari-gawa river and out of the airport area, however you can imagine the days of airport.
Recently plans for the 3rd airport for metropolitan area are proposed, and Kanagawa prefecture gave up because of the noise and lack of land, but invest for expand the Haneda airport. Anyway the remains of seaplane airport tells us the possibility of local airport for insular country Japan.
The Horiwari River riverside construction wins the prize of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers on 2010, due to survive from the Kanto earthquake (you can see the statue around GZ).
Around the GZ, you can also see the Yawata Jinja shrine. The cache container is a small metal can with magnet.

キャッシュは根岸の八幡 (やわた) 神社交差点付近にあります。
根岸飛行場は、1940-1945年に使用されていました。日本最初の民間による飛行艇のための空港でした。 第二次大戦後は、日本の飛行機製造や航空事業は進駐軍によって制限され、根岸飛行場も廃港になりました。 根岸飛行場の歴史は、旧飛行場の正門付近、GC2PC23 "Mammoth pool" にあるパネルでみることができます。
現在は飛行場跡は、根岸プールセンターと精油所になっています。誘導路であった水路も残っていますが、 製油所の敷地内で、プールセンター敷地からしか見ることができません。 キャッシュポイントは掘割川沿いであり実際には空港敷地内ではありませんでしたが、 水路を飛行艇が行き来していた時代に思いを馳せてはいかがでしょうか。
最近、首都圏第3空港計画がありましたが、騒音や敷地の問題から、 神奈川県は新しい空港を作る代わりに羽田空港拡張に出資することにしました。 海上空港と飛行艇は、島国日本における地方空港のこれからのあり方のヒントになるかもしれません。
