The Knight of the Blue River accompanied Gonçalves Zarco in the discovery of Madeira Islands and the earliest travels between islands and the mainland. Its job was to ensure the safety of the fleet against pirates and other treads, mainly while at berth.
During one of these voyages, the knight knew the splendorous Lady of the Atlantic Pearl and they immediately fall in love with each other. It was a genuine “Love at first sight” but, the absolute need for the fleet to sail again to Lisbon, forced a premature separation. Nevertheless, the Lady and the Knight shared votes of eternal love...
After returning, the Knight ordered the construction of a home and a fortress close to the mouth of the Blue River, facing the Atlantic Ocean, where he pretended to live with his beloved Lady. Meanwhile, he helped Bartolomeu (see GC2FMAR) capture a Spanish light Galleon and received, as a reward, part of the booty, which he kept to share with her, and a promise from Bartolomeu to bring his Lady to him in the very next trip.
Unfortunately, Bartolomeu never came back nor the Lady ever found the Knight again. People say that the ghost of the Knight is still guarding the treasure and awaiting for the Lady to arrive…
