Lakewood Corner Wildlife Area is a 5 acre plot which is a good spot for bird watching, fishing, and enjoying some of the natural beauty along the Rock River. The town of Lakewood was about 3/4 miles east.
Where in the world was Lakewwod? We hear the young folks say. The older ones recall with glee This village in its day. There was a church to worship God. A place to sell your grain. A general store for merchandise. A depot, to meet the train. The "Bonnie Doon" rumbled slowly through this village twice each day from Doon, Rock Rapids and Luverne with freight and travelers to convey. A livestock yards for loading livestock. A lumber yard for building needs. There was a place to purchase coal asnd seeds. On a nearby farm an ice-house stood where the Rock River ice was placed for summer use.Farmers came to purchase all their grocery needs and sell their cream and eggs. Only fond memories remain.
