Geocache Description:

As a resident of the Puna area, I've picked some of my most favorite places to share with geocachers!  I feel these each have a unique landscape or exceptional surroundings to make them a "MUST SEE" in my neck of the woods! Please enjoy the area and let me know if I can answer anything for you!!

A Marine Life Conservation District, these beautiful tide pools are fairly unique to the islands!! Created when lava entered the ocean and then shaped by wind and water, this is a gorgeous spot to snorkel and see lots of underwater wildlife!

These swiss-cheese giant tide pools are formed with the uneven flow of lava into the ocean. The physical characteristics of Wai' Opae Tidepools are similar to a barrier reef. A shallow basalt ridge on the seaward side of the tide pools causes waves to break. However, the pools still get excellent water circulation by northeast tradewind-generated swells that help support abundant coral and fish life. 1

In order to log this cache, you need to answer the following questions. Please do not answer in your log notes, but through a message to me through my profile (email must arrive within 24 hours of your log posting or your log will be deleted).

1) Please estimate the depth and size of 3 different pools.

2) Are the tide pools growing, being eroded, or holding steady at this time with coral growth? How did you come by your answer and why do you think this?

3) OPTIONAL: Submit a picture of the tide pools - extra points if your photo contains members of your party (photo should be submitted with your cache log)!!
