Geocache Description:

As you head up the main driveway into Birkenhead Park from the Grand Entrance, you are greeted by a large obelisk. This is The Jackson Memorial.

The inscription reads :
Erected by public subscription to the memory of the late
JOHN SOMERVILLE JACKSON Esq”
Magistrate of the County and for many years resident of Birkenhead
Died 8th June 1860

It was Joseph’s younger brother, the Liberal politician Sir William Jackson, 1st Baronet, who had the idea to invite Joseph Paxton to Birkenhead to design this park. Brothers Joseph and John then went into partnership and gradually bought up land in and around Birkenhead. Their interests in the locality led them into partnership with the celebrated Thomas Brassey (see geocache GC11K7V), and with the financial help of Frederick Huth, the partnership of Jackson, Brassey, Peto and Betts was born.

Please note, that although the park is open to pedestrians at all times, the large vehicular gates are locked at dusk. If you are attempting the cache in the evening it is advisable to leave your car outside the park so it does not get locked inside.

Thanks to the Birkenhead Park Rangers for all their assistance in placing this cache.
