A quick little find just off the Bolinas-Fairfax Road in a
beautiful little spot. Spend some time here and explore the area if
you have the chance. You will have a short but steep climb down
from the parking area down to the forest floor below with one small
step over a brook at certain times of the year.
After my son and I had climbed up and solved the Mystery of
Dutchman's Rock, we felt like exploring and area we had driven by
many times. We had noticed a lake in the woods and wondered what it
was all about and we promised ourselves we would find out some day.
This day could not have been any more perfect a day to keep that
promise to each other.
It was Spring when we strolled through Lily Gulch until we reached
the shore of Lily Lake. As such, it was still a small lake with
it's namesake covering a good portion of the lake surface. The
forest's wildflowers were out, the lake's Horsetails were sprouting
everywhere and the frogs croaking kept the woods from being whisper
quiet. We do wonder though if later on in the summer Lily Lake
becomes more like a glorified pond.
We weren't planning on leaving a cache in these parts, but then we
met an old Lily-Liver'd Lake Lover down near the shore. We call him
lily-liver'd because it was clear to us that he hasn't left this
place since the stagecoach used to make it's run near here. No
courage to see the outside world and leave his lake I guess. But
then again, what a nice place to make your last stand.
Enjoy your time here...
