Anglo Boer War Concentration Camp Memorial Traditional Cache
ProPax: This is so sad but the beautiful memorial plaque has been stolen and as a result there is no point in bringing geocachers here. How heartless is that - actually digging out a memorial!

During the Anglo Boer War (1899 - 1902) the British had two big concentration camps in Nelson Mandela Bay. One was erected at Kemsley Park in Port Elizabeth while the other one is situated on the current show grounds just outside Uitenhage. On both of these sites there are memorials remembering the mostly women and children who suffered and died in these camps.
The Concentration Camp monument is situated in the grounds of the Kemsley Park Sport Grounds adjacent to the Old Grey Sports Grounds.
The plaque on the monument reads:
"During the Anglo Boer War a Concentration Camp for Afrikaners was situated here from December 1900 until November 1902.
Erected by the Dames Aktueel and Rapportryers of Port Elizabeth and officially unveiled on 29 October 1984 by Professor Marius Swart".
Interesting fact: The Anglo Boer War was the first time in history that concentration camps were used.
While this memorial is relatively clean, it is surrounded by an area that needs a serious clean-up. So sorry. However, you needn't leave the memorial site to find this cache.
