Ups & Downs in Newnham #1 - Railway Crossing Traditional Cache
ChippyBloss: This cache has been missing again for a short while, so we have decided to archive the whole series. We have found this series to be far less popular than our others - don't know why as it is a great walk. All caches are now removed from Ups & Downs in Newnham - thanks to those who did show an interest. ChippyBloss.

It’s time for our third circular ramble to test the lungs and tone the legs – who needs a personal trainer when you have CB? Here is a collection of 8 caches to celebrate our second year caching anniversary in an area that is rather cache strapped at present ; } Enjoy!
Newnham-on-Severn was built on a small hill, keeping it above the river Severn flood level. It was once a busy port and hundreds of years ago even had its own Member of Parliament, but its importance declined in the 19th century. Nevertheless the railway station and the ferry service, which started in 1802, connected the Forest and the west bank of the Severn with Gloucester and the SE of the county and ensured the town had some local status, even into the 20th century. The ferry service fell out of use after World War 2 and the railway station closed soon afterwards.
This circular walk starts from Newnham and is about 5 miles in total. However quite a proportion of the walk is uphill, so we would plan to complete it in about 3 hours. That timing doesn’t include a view stop at the top or finding and logging the caches – so it may take nearer 4 hours in reality.
The only real problem with choosing Newnham is parking. The car park and toilets by the Severn are for 2 hrs parking only – we found that out after returning from a whole day’s walk. Luckily we weren’t clamped or fined – more by good luck though. We would suggest instead trying to park up the main street, in the raised parking area which runs parallel to the main road or behind the main street on one of the back roads. Parking is available along Station Rd – turn at 90 degrees to the main road by the clock tower and The George. Or use the bus that runs regularly from Lydney to Gloucester and stops at the top (Church) and bottom of the village.
There is another cache in Newnham that is near to the riverside car park & can be grabbed before you go home (GC2JMTA A48 Restbite by Geobuzzbee). Have a great day out – oh, and by the way, we have left a small gift for FTF in one of the caches, but you will have to do the circuit to find it.
To get to cache 1 leave the village along Littledean Road and go virtually due west to the cache. The cache container is a micro in a ‘different’ type of camo. As you go through the field before the bridge note the lovely property perched on the hillside to your right – Mrs CB has serious looks of envy on her face every time she sees it!!
