Regular size, .30 caliber ammo can, in a very pretty location. Higher clearance vehicle recommended, but 4-wheel drive not necessary in dry weather.
About 5 miles south from the turn-off to get to the Carlsbad Caverns, you will find Dillahunty Road, and if you head east from there and go for about 5 miles you will find a small road that leads you close to one of the springs in Ben Slaughter Draw. The road was fairly decent in dry weather, but mom's caddy would probably not do well, and a 4-wheel drive would be the best if the area is wet. There are several short sections of the road that are covered with up to 6 inches or more of very fine dust, so just drive carefully through these sections. This is a beautiful area, and well worth the drive and the short hike to get to the cache. Be sure to use all your senses to experience the area (with the possible exception of taste...). You may notice the smell of the desert sage, and you will also notice that the look, feel, and sound of the earth beneath your feet is quite interesting. It has an almost hollow feel and sound as you walk, and you will notice the area is veined with miniature canyons where the ground has eroded (sometimes not quite so small, so don't go out walking after dark). The cache is placed inside the area that is surrounded by a livestock/wildlife management fence. This is public land, and it is fully permissible and acceptable to cross into the fenced area, though you should really go through at the gate about 200 yards to the right of the sign. If you open the gate, be sure to fully close and secure it behind you (the bars in the gate are set wide enough apart that you should be able to easily just duck through without even opening the gate). The cache is about half way between the fence and the Ben Slaughter Draw itself, but feel free to explore further and actually go down to the draw and see where the natural spring is. FTF gets choice of FTF prize or pick from the other goodies. Have fun and be safe, watch out for the typical things that bite, poke, and scratch.
