Geocache Description:

Fort Creve Coeur was originally built in 1680 by French explorers LaSalle and Tonti. Upon completion they named it "Fort Broken Heart" because of the tribulations that they suffered during its construction. There is no addmission required to explore the grounds. Feel free to explore the fort inside and out. There are also some nice hiking trails in the area. Make sure to record the 4 digit code found inside the cache into your Illinois River Road geocaching log book and guide.

The park is closed for the season from Dec 31st until March 1st. During the season when the park is open the fort is usually locked, but will be opened upon request for anyone who asks during regular operating hours. The fort is locked up to prevent damage from vandalism.

Access to the fort may be limited in May and September during the events that are held there. You may want to check their calendar before going in those months. This cache was placed with permission from Fort Creve Coeur.

Photobucket The Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway stretches 291 miles along the east and west sides of the Illinois River from Ottawa to Havana, and is notable for its natural and historic qualities.
