Geocache Description:

The USS Slater is the last WWII Destroyer Escort that remains afloat in the U.S, and was one of 563 constructed between 1943 and 1945. It was named after Frank O. Slater of Alabama who was killed in action. In fact, all the Destroyer escorts were named after Naval heroes, particularly those from the early years of WWII.
The ships were designed to be maneuverable, high speed, long range vessels, that could be built quickly. They served in some of the most dangerous areas in the Pacific theater. They escorted convoys,
conducted shore bombardments, and even served as radar picket ships toward the end of the war.
